October- Sheryl's Row

October- Half Square Triangles

This month, Sheryl taught us all how to make half square triangles (HSTs).  The idea for our row is that we will make our entire row using half square triangles!  You can make however many blocks that will fill your row and in whatever sizes you want.

1.    Start by cutting your squares 1 inch bigger than you want your finished square to be after it is sewn into your row.   So, if you want your square to be finished into your row to be 2 ½ inches, you will cut your full squares 3 1/2 inches.

2.    Put right sides together (one of each color).

3.   Draw a diagonal line from one corner to the other

4.   Sew a quarter inch from the center line on both sides of the line hst tut 3

5.   Cut squares down the line that you drew. (see #3 below).
hst tut 4

6.   Iron squares open with the seam toward the darker fabric (or iron open if that is how you like them)
hst tut 5

7.   Use a ruler to square up your HST.

8.   Arrange in any order or pattern you like.  Here are a few ideas for blocks that you could make up using half square triangles.  Notice that in some of these patterns plain blocks are also incorporated.

September Meeting

We had an amazing first meeting!! Lots of ladies showed up to kick off this year's row quilt project.
Look at our group!!! (Karen left a little early, so she isn't pictured).
Erin taught this month's blockShe gave a handout with the instructions but those same instructions are found here on our blog!  JoAnn, Emily and Rachel L won our door prizes... congrats ladies!  (a charm pack, a pattern and a template)

We also had a wonderful show and tell!  Everyone is encouraged to bring their rows from the previous month, quilts they have been working on independently as well as other sewing projects to share!!
Mary J's quilt top.  She did some fun thinks with half stars that turned out really great.
Mary J's Christmas quilt made with wonky stars.  (You can find a wonky star tutorial here).  Also, I am not sure if Mary used this pattern, but there are instructions for how to make this quilt here!
Heather brought her finished project from last year.  It was her first quilt and turned out AWESOME!
Karen's quilt- She brought a couple of sampler-type quilts.  This first one is made using batiks.
Another quilt top made by Karen.. it turned out beautiful!
Lauri K's son, Aaron, made this awesome snake all by himself!  It was really cool... look at that snake head!
Erin's Knotted Squares quilt.... this was a pattern from the book, "Modern Basics".
Erin's Christmas quilt.  This used blocks made from members of her online bee.
Maureen's hand embroidery project.  She even used crayons on this!
Maureen's Lone Star quilt- the quilting is done in gold thread and looks gorgeous!
Maureen showed off this bag her sister made for her.
Strip quilt that Maureen just finished.  Maureen spent a lot of her time doing measurements and cutting things precisely, but here is a tutorial for a similar block that will help you use scraps and you could make something like this as well (if you want the to achieve the look that Maureen did, just don't put strips from end to end, stop before you get to the corners).
